Pembroke Pines was officially incorporated on January 16, 1960. The city’s rapid population growth in the mid- to late 1990s, thousands of southern Miami-Dade County residents moved northward to Broward County, many to Pembroke Pines. The resulting boom ranked the City of Pembroke Pines third in a list of “Fastest Growing Cities” in the United States in 1999. As of 2010, there were 61,703 households, with 7.8% of them being vacant. In 2000, 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
